Gearbox Tuning (TCU) · £169

Mobile across the West Midlands. Every map backed up first, reversible free for twelve months.

A gearbox tune rewrites the transmission control unit — the computer deciding when and how your automatic shifts. Sharper response, faster shifts, higher torque-holding in the gears, and launch behaviour that matches how the car is actually driven.

On a DSG or a ZF eight-speed this is the change owners feel most, more than power. The hesitation off a roundabout, the double-downshift dither, the lazy kickdown — that is all TCU logic, and all of it is tunable.

You can take the gearbox tune on its own for £169 with the engine left completely standard, or pair it with an engine map — Stage 1 + Gearbox at £299 is the best value on any automatic car we tune.

What actually happens

Same discipline as every job: the TCU's factory file is read and backed up to your account before anything is written.

The calibration is adapted to your exact gearbox and software version. Shift speed, shift points, torque limits and launch settings are adjusted — inside the tolerances the hardware is built for.

We write it, drive-check the shift behaviour, and leave only when it is right. Reversal is free for twelve months, same as an engine map.

The straight talk

The part most tuning sites leave out. We would rather you decide with your eyes open.

Only automatics apply — DSG, ZF and similar. There is no such thing as a manual gearbox remap, whatever an advert says.

A gearbox tune will not fix a worn box. If your DSG already judders or slips, tuning adds load to a component that needs attention first — we will tell you, not tune it.

If your engine is tuned but the gearbox is not, the box's factory torque limits can clip what the engine map delivers. That is why the combined package exists.

Questions

Which gearboxes can you tune?

Most modern dual-clutch and torque-converter automatics — VW group DSG/S tronic, ZF 8HP as fitted to BMW and many others, and more. Search your car on the booking page and you will get a straight answer for your exact box.

Is it worth doing without an engine remap?

Yes — shift behaviour transforms how the car feels in traffic and on a B-road even at standard power. It is the single most underrated tune we sell.

Will it make the gearbox wear faster?

Calibration stays inside what the hardware is designed to take. Faster shifts at sensible torque limits are not what kills these boxes — neglected fluid changes and existing wear are.
